2016 has been a rich year in the world of soccer. A Euro Cup ending with Cristiano Ronaldo’s first major title with Portugal, another dramatic loss in the Copa América final for Messi, or Leicester’s historical path to the Premier League, 2016 gave plenty of soccer fans news to look for and talk about. Yet, the top soccer searches on Google in the U.S. are shocking, to say the least. While soccer culture is still under construction in a country that still favors traditional American sports, the increasing diversity of the population combined with MLS efforts to promote the sport should have shown less surprising results. While Google search is not the traditional way for most people to consume soccer, the amount of  searches done in the most used search engine in the world is worth looking at to better understand the soccer culture in the United States.

MESSI MOST SEARCHED PLAYER, CR7 NOT IN THE TOP TEN

Not surprisingly Leo Messi is the most searched player in the U.S. and while Neymar’s 2nd place is not shocking either, the absence of Cristiano Ronaldo especially after the exceptional year he just pulled is mind blowing. Two of his Real Madrid teammates made the list. While seeing James Rodriguez rank 7th is logical due to the size of the Colombian community in he U.S., the presence of Pepe is rather confusing. The Premier League scored four players in the Top 10. Zlatan take the third spot and Paul Pogba, most expensive soccer transfer in history gets the 5th spot.

TOTTENHAM MOST SEARCHED TEAM, BARCELONA AND REAL MADRID NOT IN THE TOP 10

Out of the most shocking results this one is definitely the most outstanding. The most searched team on Google in the U.S is the Tottenham Hotspur F.C…. Well, I really tried to find some kind of logic on the Spurs’ first spot but found myself in front of a brick wall. Here is their 2015-2016 record: 3rd of the Premier League; eliminated at the 5th round of the FA CUP, eliminated at the 3rd round of the League Cup, eliminated at the group stage of the Champions League and eliminated at the round of 16 of the Europa League. No Barcelona, No Real Madrid. However the fourth spot for Leicester City F.C. is logical due to their historical win of the 2015-2016 Premier League. Very interesting fact: three Mexican teams made it in the Top 10 which highlights the influence of the Mexican community in U.S. soccer culture.

  1. Tottenham Hotspur F.C.
  2. Liverpool F.C.
  3. C.D. Guadalajara
  4. Leicester City F.C.
  5. Borussia Dortmund
  6. Sevilla FC
  7. Cruz Azul
  8. Everton F.C.
  9. C.F. Monterrey
  10. A.S. Roma

SOUNDERS MOST SEARCHED MLS TEAM, NO NEW YORK TEAMS IN THE TOP 10

Without surprise the Seattle Sounders was the most searched MLS team on Google. The volume of searches was rightfully influenced by the Sounders’ 2015-2016 title acquisition. Toronto FC great performances in the playoffs also greatly justified their second post. One surprising fact: no New York team is in the TOP 10. Pirlo, Lampard, and Villa did not suffice to generate interest in searches. The LA Galaxy, arguably the most powerful franchise of the MLS, did not make the Top 10 either.

HOPE SOLO MOST SEARCHED WOMEN SOCCER PLAYER

The Women United States Soccer team is, in my opinion the pride of U.S. soccer. Rarely disappointing, always inspirational, they represent progress and excellence in a world dominated by men. They are greatly contributing to the development of the sport. The fact that Google has tracked the most searched women players is a huge indicator of the growing interest in the sport. This also comes at a time when the notorious video game franchise, FIFA part of EA Sports, started to showcase the USWNT in the game. Hope Solo, most searched women soccer in the country is now rightfully considered an icon of soccer.

SOCCER MOST SEARCHED SPORTS FOR THE OLYMPICS

This is a big one; a huge one. Soccer was the most searched sports at the Olympics in the United States. And the Olympics were the most searched news topic in 2016 in the U.S. (Yes, better than the 2016 Elections). So yes this is a big deal. Better than basketball for which is the U.S. is the homeland. Better than swimming which is huge when we know that Michael Phelps is the most searched athlete in the U.S. and the #3 most searched personality overall in the U.S (behind Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump). The popularity of soccer is definitely winning ground in America.
