It’s been less than two weeks since the 45th president of the United States took office and people are feeling all sorts of feelings: while many still feel despair, many are still shocked and worried, many more feel empowered to resist all the changes the Trump Administration is implementing.

After an energizing and uplifting Women’s March on Washington (and in cities all over the USA and even around the world!) it seems that every day there is something new and more outlandish to tackle. This week it has been the targeting of immigrants.

After an awful executive order was issued barring refugees AND legal permanent residents from seven Muslim countries from entering the United States, citizens took to the airports, parks, plazas all over the United States protesting this un-American and illegal executive order.

It’s time to RESIST! I invite you to read what Bill Moyers’ The Trump Resistance Plan Step One (and subsequent steps!). In it he outlines the ways in which Trump is trying to keep the American people down… he says, “ The first step to resisting President-elect Trump is understanding how he and Kellyanne Conway deploy their “Three Ds” strategy: deflect, divert and distract.” Read more about Trump’s Resistance Plan here.

QUESTION AND OPPOSE UNFIT CABINET NOMINEES

Betsy DeVos, nominee for Secretary of Education wants to privatize public school education, leaving out hte most vulnerable chldren in our society. In addition, she thinks guns in schools is OK, because “there may be grizzlies.” Betsy also doesn’t support IDEA, the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act and thinks it’s best left to the states. Read more about why that’s a bad idea from kick ass special needs parent advocate Lisa Quinones- Fontanez from Atypical Familia.

If you care about education, education equality for children with special needs, OPPOSE Betsy DeVos as Secretary of Education. DeVos’ second hearing was on  January 31st .

DeVos passed committee (though barely and not without controversy!) In order to block her confirmation, three GOP senators need to vote NO.  As of writing this, it has been reported that Senator Susan Collins (Republican from Maine ) and Senator Lisa Murkowski (Republican from Alaska) will vote NO.

If the vote is a tie, Pence will be the tiebreaker, so keep calling Republican senators (and keep calling Collins and Murkowski too, to keep the pressure on!)

CALL THEM OUT ON THEIR BS

No, don’t put up with “alternative facts” as Kellyanne Conway called blatant lies told by the Press Secretary Sean Spicer. Call them out every single time.

TEACH OUR KIDS THAT RACISM IS WRONG

We all know that racism is taught, not innate. We need to have conversations with our children about the importance of respecting others, celebrating diversity and saying no to bigotry and racism in all its forms.

Here are two free guides that can help parents and teachers:

1- #RespectOneAnother Guide created by Monica Olivera aka

MommyMaestra
The resource guide offers:

– a parents’ guide
– an educator’s guide
– discussion questions
– a recommended book list on books about kindness, respect and doing good (which you can also find here)
– a book list on how to deal with bullying
– a recommended book list on books to celebrate diversity.
